とても恥ずかしい

K: 感情を伝える表現です。このbe embarrassed、これは一過性の恥ずかしさを表します。恥ずかしさはbe ashamedでも表わせますが、こちらはですね通常倫理的、社会的な失態や深い後悔の念につながります。というわけで、まあそこまであまり深刻にはならない恥ずかしい、それはこちらのembarrassedで表現するのが適切です。

I didn’t say a word to anyone. I was tongue-tied. 

K: キャロリンさん、私の父はというのはmy fatherですよね。あとはdadとか使ってもいいでしょうか。

C: Oh yeah, that’s right. In English you can say either my father or my dad. Both are fine. For me, saying my dad is a little bit more casual, father sounds very formal to me.

 K: 恥ずかしい思いをしたというのはジェフさん、これはHe was ashamed. ではどうでしょうね。

J: Erm probably wouldn’t work in this situation. That ashamed is a little too serious, a little too deep. So embarrassed is the best word to use.

K: なるほど。一言の英語もというんですけどこのダイアログではI didn’t say a word to anyoneでしたけども一言の「英語も」というのはどう言いますかねキャロリンさん。

C: Oh here, we would say not a word of English.

K: なるほど。a wordの後にof Englishを加えればいいということですね。

C: Right.

K: 最後のポイントですが、言葉が出てこなかった。これはHe couldn’t say ではどうでしょうかねジェフさん。ダイアログではHe didn’t sayとなっていますけれど。

J: Couldn’t means that he actually couldn’t but there is a possibility that he could but he was too shy so he didn’t. Didn’t is the best word.

K: なるほど。ここでは話さなかったということでdidn’tですね。couldn’tというと完全にもう能力がないという意味になってしまうわけですよね。　

J: That’s right.
