APPLY IT!
I started out as a treasure hunter.

U R the ☆!
All: Well done!

SAY IT!
All: That’s a feather in your cap!

WRITE IT!

I started out as a treasure hunter.
Interesting. How did that go?
Not well. I couldn’t make ends meet.

C: Well, in this case, because the two ideas are different from each other, we have to use but.
J: Right. Not well. This means it didn’t go well. You can say it that way, too.
C: Well, actually, yeah, Ken. They’re both OK. We can make one sentence and put the word because between the two sentences. Or we can keep it as one sentence and not use the word because.

C: He started out as a treasure hunter but it didn’t go well. He couldn’t make ends meet.

J: He started out as a treasure hunter but it didn’t go well because he couldn’t make ends meet.

APPLY IT!

I don’t know where to start.

I don’t know where to begin.

U R the ☆
All: That was lovely!

SAY IT!
All: You’re right on!

WRITE IT!

To begin with, I was late for work because of a train delay.
And when I went back to work, my computer crashed.

Today was a bad day,とかですね、彼女にとってですからfor herとこう持ってきてよろしいですかね。
J: Yes, you can say it that way. And you can also say “It was a bad day for her today.” And today can move in the front like you said, it can move to the beginning. “Today was a bad day for her.” And there’s one more way of saying it. “She had a bad day today.”
C: Yeah, they’re both fine. I feel like saying “and then” builds the drama a little bit in the sentence.
J: We usually use computer.
K: OK.
J: It’s simple. We don’t usually use personal computer.

醤油
soy sauce

stir

like so
K:これはlike thisあるいはthis wayともいいます。ここではstir it well like soと言ってかき混ぜてみせています。

different

I’ll say that much.
I’ll say this much.

APPLY IT!
What exactly is this again?

What is 何々 again? それにexactly(正確には、具体的には)という言葉を加えてあります。

U R the ☆!
All: Sounds great!

SAY IT !
All: You are the stir, no, star!

WRITE IT!

Is this the first time for you to eat natto?
Fermented soy beans. How do you like it?
It’s different.

J: Well, there’s three ways. The first one is “natto, fermented soy beans.” The second is “natto, or fermented soy beans.” And third is “natto, it’s fermented soy beans.”
C: Well, it can actually move around to three different parts of the sentence. Today can be at the beginning. We can say “Today she tried natto for the first time.” Or we can have it in the middle. We could say “She tried natto today for the first time.” Or it can come at the end. We can say “She tried natto for the first time today.”

K: He was growling at the end.
J: She doesn’t have much faith in him.
C: I wonder why.

Fine with me
K: これはIt’s fine with me、あるいはThat’s fine with meの略です。

何々 it is.
Cheese and crackers, it isとします。 Five o’clock, it isとなります。

There’s a first time for everything.

APPLY IT
There’s a first time for everything.

There’s always a first time。

U R the ☆
All: You’re number one!

SAY IT!
All: You’re making us hungry!

WRITE IT!
What should we serve for the main course?
I was thinking of making roast chicken.
There’s a first time for everything.

C: Well, in the dialog we did say for the main course, but here I don’t think we need the. We can just say for dessert.
make an apple pie、あるいはbake an apple pie、どっちでしょうね、Jeffさん。
J: You can use either one because you make an apple pie and you also bake an apple pie.
I’ve never made it beforeか、I’ve never made one beforeなのか、どうでしょうかねCarolynさん。
C: Here both are fine because we’re talking about it in a general sense. Not a specific pie like this one or that one so we can use both made it and made one.

be working on 何々

I know. I want to get a head start.

 APPLY IT
You’re way ahead of the game.

U R the ☆
All: You’re way ahead of the game, too!

SAY IT!
All: You’re on top of it! Right on!

WRITE IT!

What page are you on?
Really? You’re way ahead of the game.

K:Jeff
J: In English, we say already. I’m already such and such.
K: OK.
C: In English, it’s War and Peace. It’s a famous novel written by Tolstoy.
J: We use the word “on.”
J: Uh-huh. I’m already on such and such. I’m already on the last chapter. I’m already on page 700. We use on.
onを使う。
C: Yeah, that’s right. You could say I think I’m way ahead of the game.

I’m already on the last chapter of War and Peace. I think I’m way ahead of the game.
